As a timeless symbol of female beauty, perhaps no sculpture can replace the Venus de Milo in the hearts of the living.
But how did she get on that pedestal?
Venus is the goddess of love and beauty in ancient Greece. Before the Venus of Melos was unearthed, the most famous one was the Venus of Medici in Italy.
It was looted by Napoleon and returned to France, where it sat in the Louvre for 12 years. But after the fall of Napoleon, the sculpture was ruthlessly taken back by Italy.
This is very exciting for France. Fortunately, within a few years, the Venus de Milos was unearthed. In a bid to compete with Italy, France is determined to promote the statue as a replacement for the "Medici Venus" in the hearts of the world.
However, the Venus was born with defects and no arms when it was unearthed. Experts have proposed many ways to restore the Venus, but the Louvre has refused to do so, insisting on keeping it in its damaged state and calling it "incomplete beauty."
This is similar to the "Mona Lisa" when the theft, still in place to retain the empty wall and frame of the wonderful. This is the genius of the Louvre, allowing the "armless Venus" to be quickly put on a pedestal.
Venus's severed arm has left an eternal mystery, leading people to remember her. The Louvre has helped spread the idea of "imperfect beauty", turning the sculpture's imperfect success into an advantage.
True, the light is incomplete without beauty, but just sensationalism. In fact, arm or no arm, this Venus is a masterpiece of classical statue.
First of all, Venus was born after ancient Greece, 300 years after Alexander the Great conquered Greece and swept through Asia, Europe and Africa, known as the Hellenistic Period. Compared with ancient Greece, art at this time was influenced by Eastern culture and was more dynamic.
Venus de Milos VS the Venus de Medici
What makes this "Venus with a Broken arm" difficult to surpass is that she embodies the aesthetic of all ages. It has the artistic beauty of classical sculpture and the incomplete beauty of modern concept. Both coincidence and necessity.
After all, this classic is an historical work. Because of its special significance, people like this sculpture very much. Therefore, more and more people seeks a copy of the historical work.
Because these classic historical works are world -renowned and the symbol of an era, this has made high requirements for the details of the carving of replicas.
