The Thinker
Rodin，1880
In the 19th century, the great French sculptor Rodin's "Thinker" is undoubtedly one of the most famous sculptures in the world. But it's not a stand-alone work, it's part of a giant sculpture called "Hell's Gate."
In 1880, Rodin was invited by the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris to carve a bronze gate. Rodin mused for a long time, eventually creating the monumental sculpture "The Gates of Hell" inspired by Dante's Divine Comedy.
Rodin chose "From me into the city of misery, from me into the pit of sin, you entered, leaving all hope behind" as the theme of the bronze gate.
The Thinker is one of 186 human figures carved on the door, who are fighting and torturing themselves for passion, fear and ideal. It is based on Dante, author of the Divine Comedy.
Above the "gates of Hell" are three men with bowed heads, known as the "Three Shadows", who draw the viewer's eye into the "hell". In the center of the banner under the lintel was "The Thinker."
Beneath the banner is the entrance to Hell, where the evil souls who are about to be cast into hell are engaged in a painful and desperate final struggle, and all the characters are naked. Because Rodin believed that only the naked body can express thoughts and emotions in the most intuitive way.
As his last epic work, Rodin wrote "Hell's Gate" from the age of 40 until he died at 77. During 37 years of creation, I have integrated my thoughts on life and changes of ideas into this "door of hell".
