Michelangelo's Pieta, one of the most fascinating sculptures in the history of art, is the Renaissance genius's most iconic work.
In 1497, when Michelangelo was just 22, he was commissioned by Cardinal Jean Villeres to create a sculpture of the Virgin Mary in the arms of the dead Jesus.
The statue is scheduled to be placed on the altar of St. Petronio's church in the Vatican, where pilgrims from around the world will pay their respects during the celebration of the Holy Year 1500.
Michelangelo spent nine months selecting the marble and transporting it from the Carrara quarry to Rome with an incredibly demanding selection of materials.
Using a classic pyramid composition, the statue depicts the Virgin Mary in grief as she cradles the crucified Christ. Christ lay on his back between the knees of the Virgin Mary, the scars on his ribs visible.
The young Mary, dressed in a robe and cloak, cradles Christ in her right hand, her face mournful. The robe sets off the outline while reconciling the conflict between composition and proportion.
Michelangelo broke with tradition by portraying Mary as a young girl, saying: "The Virgin is the embodiment of purity and sublimity, the symbol of the sacred, and therefore is capable of eternal youth. Her eternal and noble image is a symbol of the human ideal of the pursuit of good things."
The sculpture was said to be so realistic that everyone wondered if it had been made by such a young Michelangelo. In a fit of pique, he carved his name on the breast band of the Virgin Mary, the only work signed by Michelangelo himself.
